Munich’s Mobile Cinema Project Aims to Connect Residents

Munich, August 27, 2026 – A new mobile open-air cinema initiative, ‘Cine Vélo Cité,’ has begun its ten-day journey across Munich, with the goal of bringing neighbors together through the shared experience of local films. Spearheaded by Tanja Krainhöfer, 58, and Patrik Thomas, 40, the project seeks to combat the isolation often felt in large cities by creating communal gathering spaces.

Inspiration from Vienna’s ‘Volxkino’

The duo behind ‘Cine Vélo Cité’ drew inspiration from Vienna’s long-standing ‘Volxkino,’ an open-air cinema initiative that began in June 1990. The Viennese model, known for its well-organized summer film program, serves as a blueprint for Krainhöfer and Thomas’s ambitions for their Munich project, which they hope will evolve into a similar success story. While ‘Cine Vélo Cité’ may not yet boast the same legacy, the founders envision a future where ‘Münchner G’schichten’ (Munich Stories) become a beloved tradition.

Bringing Films to the Neighborhoods

For ten days, the mobile cinema will travel to different districts across Munich, setting up screenings in various locations. This decentralized approach is central to the project’s mission of reaching diverse communities and making cultural experiences accessible to all residents. By bringing films directly to people’s doorsteps, ‘Cine Vélo Cité’ aims to break down barriers and encourage interaction among neighbors who might not otherwise connect.

‘Engine of Love’ Among Featured Films

Among the films being screened is the short film ‘Engine of Love’ by Mira-Belle Rose Bryld, which features scenes shot in iconic Munich locations, including the subway station beneath Marienplatz. Showcasing films that resonate with the local identity is a key aspect of the project, as it helps to create a sense of shared experience and pride in the city’s cultural output.

Addressing Urban Isolation

The initiative comes at a time when discussions about urban isolation and the need for stronger community ties are increasingly prevalent. Large cities, while offering numerous opportunities, can sometimes lead to a sense of anonymity among residents. ‘Cine Vélo Cité’ aims to counteract this by providing informal, engaging platforms for people to gather, socialize, and connect over a shared love of cinema.

Future Prospects for ‘Cine Vélo Cité’

While the current run is a ten-day event, Krainhöfer and Thomas are hopeful about the long-term potential of ‘Cine Vélo Cité’ and ‘Münchner G’schichten.’ The success of similar projects, such as Vienna’s ‘Volxkino,’ demonstrates the enduring appeal and community-building power of mobile open-air cinemas. The founders are optimistic that this initial phase will lay the groundwork for a sustained and expanding cultural offering in Munich.

The project’s launch has been met with positive anticipation from local residents and cultural enthusiasts, who see it as a fresh and engaging way to experience film and connect with their city and fellow citizens.
